Arrival in the Village – 1994
Arrival in the Village – 1994

This year in 2025, Asas de Socorro will celebrate 70 Years since its beginning.

Over these decades, we have collected beautiful stories that "Share God's love for generations." You will be touched by the testimony of Josias and Sara Cambuy, missionaries from Missão Novas Tribos do Brasil, who served as missionaries in the 1990s in one of the most isolated places in our country.

"Choosing just one story would not be enough, given everything we experienced over the 13 years serving in that community."

For the Cambuy Family, 1994 was a year full of challenges and expectations, but above all, it was a time marked by the abundant flow of God’s grace. They learned so much about the Lord through their experiences, one of which particularly shaped their lives: they began working in an indigenous village.

However, getting there was not easy. How could they reach such a remote place—without roads, without Wi-Fi, without any means of communication? At first, the only way was to endure long days in the jungle, crossing dangerous rivers, and facing all the challenges of the jungle.

That’s when God surprised them. He connected the missionaries with Asas de Socorro, a partner that had everything they needed: experienced pilots, mechanics, airplanes, and all the support to take them to those who needed to hear the Word of God.

"As the mission's motto says: 'Giving wings to those who give their lives,' and that’s exactly what they did for us," the couple affirms.

Thanks to this partnership, traveling to and from the village became much safer and faster.

Sara shares that "during the years we spent there with our family and our daughters, Glenda and Karis, we collected unforgettable stories, shared the testimony of God’s wonderful grace, and learned the importance of working as a team."

One of the most special moments for the family was flight day. For the village, this was a celebration—the famous "plane day, party day!" Every time a plane landed, there was a special lunch. People gathered and warmly welcomed the pilots.

But these pilots were not just pilots—they were friends, pastors, and even "uncles" to Glenda and Karis, the missionaries' daughters.

Besides bringing supplies, the pilots spent time with the Cambuy Family, played with the children, and, most importantly, updated them on what was happening in the outside world. At that time, without internet or television, these visits were live news reports!

However, Asas de Socorro didn’t serve only the missionaries. The flights were essential for saving many lives in the village.

"I lost count of how many times we called the plane to take someone out… Thank God we could count on this special support," said Sara.

One story was particularly memorable for this family. A young indigenous girl, about four or five years old, developed a small eye infection. Through the radio—their only means of communication—doctors advised the missionaries that she needed to leave the village immediately, as she could have sepsis. And that’s exactly what happened!

The missionaries called Asas de Socorro right away, and the plane flew her to Boa Vista. She was hospitalized for a month… Today, as an adult, married, and with children, she is a living testimony of how this work made—and still makes—a difference.

This is the reality of those living in such isolated regions. But even in the most difficult moments, we know that God is in control of everything.

"Looking back, we are immensely grateful for everything we experienced and learned. Serving God in that village was not just a mission—it was a privilege! And every flight that landed there was a reminder of how much He cares for every detail," Josias and Sara Cambuy recall.

In every challenge they faced, they repeated:

"I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth." (Psalm 121:1-2)

This is just one story of how Asas de Socorro has been a tool in God's hands to bless ministries, families, and entire communities.

LEARNING FROM THE MASTER

Marcos Luth shares his experience in a project with Mission PURAQUÊ.

Through his words, we can see that everything we receive from Christ is the best thing we can share with others.

"Through my experiences, I have learned that a community is only strong when different people work together for a common goal.

If our projects only had people like me, they certainly wouldn’t work. We are part of a body, where each person has a role, and that’s exactly what makes everything possible.

God chooses different people and uses them according to His purpose, just as He did with the twelve disciples. Even though they were so different from each other, He united them to fulfill a mission."

During our time in Puraquequara, we accomplished a great work. We evangelized, cared for people, and gave—not only our time, medical assistance, or art—but everything we could to bless the community with God's love.

We had the opportunity to encourage them to change their attitudes and grow closer to Jesus, experiencing a personal relationship with Him.

"Before Christ, my life was filled with sadness. Today, it is full of joy. Even when we get tired in these projects, we continue strong and joyful, because it is in His strength that we serve."

In these projects, I am a Workshop Instructor, and that is very special to me because it’s exactly what Jesus did—He taught.

Jesus is our faithful Master and continues to teach us. I keep learning from Him and try to share just as I have received from Him.

Being an instructor here is not just about teaching a class, passing on a skill, or sharing information. It goes beyond that—it’s about creating a real connection with people and forming a family in faith.

What a beautiful perspective! You too can have a life-changing experience like Marcos. Come on board with us!
